About:

En route from Riverhead to Manhattan, Chris Pendergast made a special stop at Marion Street School in Lynbrook as part of his 19th annual Ride for Life ALS fundraising event.

Pendergast was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 1993. For the past 19 years, he has been participating in Ride for Life to raise awareness and funds to fight this fatal disease.

Students and student athletes formed a special bond with Pendergast earlier in the year when he visited their school for a special assembly. On that day, he encouraged them to believe that one person can make a difference. After his moving presentation, Principal Theresa Macchia reached out to him requesting that their school be a stop on his ride, and he gladly agreed. Students joined his fundraising effort, selling snacks and water, and also hosting an Ice Bucket Challenge. All together, they collected more than $4,000, which they presented to Pendergast when he stopped at their school.
